Amsterdam architecture is amazing.
The Jordaan in the old days was a workers neighbourhood and was built on the existing agricultural (Polder) land.
If you look at the city map you can see that the canals follow a deliberate pattern.
The Canals were designed as a fancy boulevard for the poshest members of society.
The nine streets (close to the Jordaan) and the three main canals aren’t actually part of the Jordaan.
