In the period 1500-1900 there were more than a thousand mills in the Zaan district.
These special mills were used to process raw materials to products on a large scale.
The mills of the Zaan district significantly contributed to the rise of the Netherlands in the golden age.
Sailing with ships made from timber sawn in the Zaan district, the Dutch East India Company and the West
India company, conquered the world’s seas. Tradesmen brought back dyestuffs, tobacco and spices from their travels.
